Much has been written about the connection between body, mind, and spirit. Years of research into energy medicine have proven there is a direct link between what we think, feel, and the health of our physical body. To truly heal from an illness, one must consider associated thought patterns, beliefs, and emotions that may be connected to the root of the problem. Chronic conditions are a message from the body that the core issue has not yet been resolved. “Incurable” illnesses only mean that the illness cannot be “cured” through outer means alone and we must go within to facilitate true and lasting healing. Different stressors, emotions, and thought patterns will manifest in different parts of the body. If you take the time to listen to your body and be honest with what you think and feel, you will tap into an infinite source of wisdom about yourself. Our bodies are divinely designed to experience the richness of life through our senses. They come with a built-in communication system that is also interpreted with our senses.
Our bodies have seven major energy centers with additional secondary centers that connect our physical bodies to our spiritual self through levels of consciousness. Each center, known as a chakra, also corresponds to certain organs and glands in the body along with various emotions and beliefs. The result of an unresolved issue in our consciousness can manifest as a physical imbalance in a specific part of the body. Emotional barriers to love are known to undermine the health of the heart while financial fears tend to create tension and discomfort in the lower back. Digestive problems may reflect unresolved issues around personal power and self-esteem. The list of possible issues is endless and the symptoms they can produce will vary from person to person. What remains consistent are the organs and glands related to specific chakras in the body and the corresponding thought patterns that will migrate to those chakras and have an impact on the physical body.
Here is a brief overview of the seven major chakras, the related physical body parts, the primary functions of each particular chakra, and some off the issues that may impact the balance of the chakra. According to Caroline Myss, Ph.D., in her book Anatomy of Spirit, there are three principles to consider when intuitively tuning in and discovering what your energy system is all about.
1. “Your biography becomes your biology” (40). We are living, breathing history novels that contain a complete recording of everything we think, feel, and experience. As we move through our lives our physical body becomes a testimony of our beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, hopes, and fears.
2. “Personal power is necessary for health and wellness” (43). Our personal power is a mediator between our inner and outer worlds. An external concept of power without internal power leaves us open and vulnerable to health issues. Power is often equated with the ability to control. True power, however, comes from one’s inner resources and belief in a higher power. Our relationship to our personal power is at the core of our health.
3. “You alone can help yourself heal” (47). Energy medicine is a holistic philosophy that teaches, “I am responsible for the creation of my health. I therefore participated, at some level, in the creation of this illness. I can participate in the healing of this illness by healing myself, which means simultaneously healing my emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual being” (47). You can enlist the aid of medicine, doctors, healers, and the like, but without your own honest inventory and active participation, lasting health cannot be restored. “Curing” is different the “healing”. Curing is a passive state where you give your power over to an external source, believing it will alleviate your symptoms. “Healing”, on the other hand, involves an active and internal process of exploring one’s attitudes, emotions, memories, and beliefs with the desire to release any and all patterns that prevent one from being restored to optimal health and well-being.
This does not suggest that one should not use external support when needed, but rather not to rely solely on outside influences to resolve health issues that originate from within. Health implies a state of balance between the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being. When you approach healing from a holistic perspective, it is important to honor the body’s innate wisdom. When we have balance in our thoughts, our emotions, our diet, and our daily activities, the body reflects that balance back to us. Conversely, if we are out of balance in our core, our bodies will reflect that and communicate with us through symptoms. By honoring the body’s innate process and prioritizing the steps you need to take, you can move through your healing with greater ease. You will know you are making progress when you notice your symptoms diminishing and a sense of balance and well-being is felt.
If you are accustomed to taking a medication to alleviate a symptom right away, this process will be new to you because it requires you pay attention to what you are noticing and letting those symptoms speak to you, giving you feedback as you make conscious choices. This is not a onetime process but a lifelong journey. Each step of the way you expand your awareness of Oneness with all life, transforming your personality and aligning your consciousness with Absolute consciousness. Healing is a journey that ultimately leads you back home to your spiritual essence and source of all life. It can be an amazing journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and spiritual growth.
