Emotions are “energy in motion.” They are a conscious mental reaction in response to circumstances, moods, and relationships with others. Emotions can represent a synthesis of personal experience, individual behaviors, and neuro-chemical activities that take place within the brain.
Over time we allow our thoughts to dictate who we believe we are and what we can and cannot do. These ideas can be our own creation or those of someone else, which we have accepted as true. Our feelings become the reflection of those thoughts and are expressed through our emotional nature. Our emotions are what give color to our personality and provide the fuel for authentic power.
The seat of our emotional power lies within the heart, centered in the chest. This center of energy mediates between our physical body and our spiritual essence. It is here in our heart of hearts that we carry emotions related to our internal world of thoughts and ideas. Here also lies the source of energy for our personal health and well-being. This takes the form of self acceptance, self esteem, self respect, and self love.
Our role in maintaining our health is to become aware of what we are feeling and manage those feelings appropriately. If we neglect ourselves emotionally we can become emotionally toxic which in turn has a negative impact on the health of our bodies. This toxic emotional energy gets stuck in the body causing distress in some part of the physical anatomy. Many believe that toxic emotional stress levels are the origin of many diseases and illnesses that ultimately manifest in physical form. You may have heard the expression, “anger only hurts the person who is angry.” We injure ourselves when we harbor negative emotions like anger, criticism, resentment, judgement, and even guilt. These emotions can and will be damaging over a period of time. Every emotion has a corresponding response system within the brain. In turn, they cause a physiological response in the body which is controlled by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. You may experience these responses as a rapid heartbeat, restricted breathing, upset stomach, headaches, pain, elevated blood pressure, bowel disturbances, food cravings, inflammation, and more, depending on your personal circumstance.
Positive emotions, on the other hand, feed our hearts and nourish us on many levels. Self love is a requirement for well-being on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels of our being. When our hearts our filled with joy, love, peace, and harmony, our bodies will reflect those energies in our overall state of being. Self love is often interpreted as giving material things to oneself but that is really a superficial type of self love. Authentic self love requires introspection by asking oneself questions such as, “What do I love, is this right for me, does this bring me joy, is this in alignment with my core values, what am I feeling guided to do?”
Emotions are a gift as they communicate with us continuously day in and day out, letting us know what is right for us and what feeds us on a soul level. The energy of love and joy opens and expands the sacred heart center. This becomes the doorway for connecting with our heart’s messages and spiritual direction, which can empower us to heal ourselves from the inside out.
