We can all agree that we enjoy sweet treats and sugar tastes delicious. The downside is we have become a nation addicted to sugar. The average American consumes 152 pounds of sugar a year. 80% of food items in the grocery store are spiked with added sugars, including sodas and other beverages.
Sugar is in everything, many times hidden under various names that are still sugars. There are over 60 different names for sugar on food labels. There are even hidden sugars in salad dressings, healthy cereals, pasta sauce, condiments, instant oatmeal, cliff bars, applesauce, yogurts, soda, beverages, breads, and more.
One in two Americans, including 1 in 4 teenagers, has insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. Even though most of us understand sugar is not good for us, we still consume it. Why is that? Well, sugar is an addictive substance. Eating even a small amount creates a desire to eat more. Sugar addiction is a biological disorder, driven by hormones and neurotransmitters that fuel cravings. According to brain scans, sugar is as addictive as cocaine. According to the movie Fed-Up, sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine. It releases an opiate-like substance that activates the brain’s reward system.
Furthermore, the body depletes its own store of minerals and enzymes to metabolize and absorb sugar substances. There is absolutely NO nutritional value in sugar. Rather, it disturbs blood ph, the gut microbiome, and is highly inflammatory. In chapter 2 of the book Suicide by Sugar by Nancy Appleton,PhD., she lists 140 reasons why sugar is ruining our health. Each reason is backed up with documentation. The long term effects of ingesting sugar are causing many diseases and weakening our immune system.
