Just as a sports coach can help an athlete develop their skills and excel at a sport, heath and wellness coaches help people excel at becoming a better version of themselves. The coaching process is similar to talk therapy in that it involves talking though issues and ideas, but there is also a major difference between the two. In a coaching conversation the person being coached is in the driver’s seat, becoming empowered, setting their goals and deciding how they best want to achieve them.
People hire health coaches for many reasons. Some want help reducing stress while others are dealing with health challenges. Coaching can help a person overcome behavior patterns that no longer serve them. Limiting beliefs can be uncovered and lives transformed in a non-judgmental, supportive coaching relationship.
A coach will ask open-ended questions to help a client elicit his or her own reasons for wanting to make changes rather than telling them what they should or should not do. In a coaching relationship people are more likely to succeed at making changes for their own reasons and on their own terms.
Positive psychology is at the cornerstone of health and wellness coaching. Whereas traditional psychology focuses on what is “wrong” with a person and what needs to be “fixed,” The coaching philosophy focuses on what is right with a person and what their strengths are. Then they work with you to harness those strengths and apply them towards changing behaviors and reaching your goals.
Another unique aspect of coaching is that it can be done on an individual basis or in group setting. Working with a coach provides you with unconditional acceptance and support while gently holding you accountable. They help you stay focused on the here and now while holding a vision of who you want to become. In a group setting you create a community of supportive peers who motivate each other to new heights. By participating in a group coaching program there is an even higher likelihood of achieving your goals and staying true to your self and your dreams.
There are no limits to what can be accomplished when working with a coach. You may find yourself navigating new and uncharted territory that opens you up to new possibilities. You may work with a coach with one goal in mind only to discover a deeper issue you want to address. The choice to work on is always up to you.
